What Is Sofwave Treatment? Ultrasound Tightening Explained

A plain-English definition of Sofwave: the technology, the skin layer it targets, and what to expect.

What is Sofwave treatment? Sofwave is a noninvasive skin tightening treatment that uses SUPERB™ ultrasound to deliver focused energy about 1.5mm deep into the mid-dermis. That controlled heat prompts the skin to build new collagen. It is FDA-cleared for fine lines and wrinkles, needs no downtime, and results build over about 12 weeks.

It suits adults who want firmer skin without surgery or recovery. Here is the technology, layer by layer, along with what it can and cannot do at our laser and skin tightening treatments at our Edina clinic.

What is Sofwave treatment?

Sofwave is an ultrasound-based treatment, not a laser. It heats a precise layer of the mid-dermis to stimulate collagen and elastin production. It treats fine lines, wrinkles and mild skin laxity on the face and neck.

The FDA clears devices through its 510(k) process, so the correct word is "cleared," not "approved." You can check the Sofwave SUPERB™ record in the FDA 510(k) premarket notification database.

We are one of the only Sofwave providers in the Edina area. Our clinic offers just two treatments, laser hair removal and Sofwave, so we focus on doing both well. For the broader picture, read our guide to Sofwave skin tightening as a non-invasive alternative to surgery and injectables.

Takeaway: Sofwave is cleared ultrasound tightening for fine lines and laxity, with no surgery.

How does Sofwave work?

Sofwave uses SUPERB™ (Synchronous Ultrasound Parallel Beam) technology. Parallel ultrasound beams deliver controlled heat to a set depth of about 1.5mm in the mid-dermis. Built-in cooling protects the outer skin. The heat signals the body to build new collagen over about 12 weeks.

Four terms cover most of it:

  • SUPERB™: the parallel-beam ultrasound system that sets the energy delivery.
  • Mid-dermis: the middle part of the skin's collagen-rich layer, the target zone.
  • Sofcool™: integrated cooling that protects the surface during treatment.
  • Collagen remodeling: the body's gradual repair response after controlled heating.

If you want to go deeper on the evidence behind any device, ask your provider to walk you through it. We are glad to do that during your consultation.

Takeaway: Parallel ultrasound at a fixed shallow depth, plus surface cooling, drives gradual collagen renewal.

Which skin layers does Sofwave target? Is it SMAS?

Sofwave targets the mid-dermis, about 1.5mm below the surface. It does not target the deeper SMAS (superficial musculoaponeurotic system) layer under the fat. It tightens and smooths the skin itself and is not a substitute for surgical SMAS lifting.

Here is the anatomy. The epidermis is the outermost skin layer, with the dermis beneath it, then fat, then deeper structures. Collagen sits mainly in the dermis, which is why that is the target.

Depth is not the same as results. Going deeper is not automatically better, and a good provider says plainly what a shallow, controlled depth can and cannot do. Sofwave will not give you a facelift.

Skin tone is a separate question. Ultrasound is energy, not light, so the safety conversation differs from lasers. We talk through your skin type in person, and our candidate and skin type fit guide covers this in more detail.

Takeaway: Sofwave works in the mid-dermis, not the SMAS, and we say so up front.

How is Sofwave different from HIFU, radiofrequency and lasers?

The treatments differ in depth, energy type and comfort. Lasers use light, radiofrequency uses electrical current, and HIFU uses focused ultrasound at points. Sofwave uses parallel ultrasound beams at one consistent shallow depth, with built-in surface cooling.

The right choice depends on your goals. In our work with clients, we match the technology to the concern: where you see laxity, how much, and how much downtime you will accept.

Many of our laser hair removal clients ask about tightening next. See Sofwave skin tightening in Edina as a complement to laser hair removal results.

Takeaway: Different energy types suit different goals, so choose by outcome, not by buzzword.

Who is Sofwave for, and what should you expect?

Sofwave suits adults with mild to moderate laxity or fine lines who want no surgery and no downtime. A typical plan is one to two sessions of 30 to 45 minutes, with the same technician throughout. Results are progressive over about 12 weeks.

Our team brings 17+ years and 150,000+ procedures of clinic-wide experience. In our consultations, we map your jawline, neck and brow goals before recommending one or two sessions. We also say honestly when Sofwave is not the right fit.

Here is what happens during your Sofwave consultation at Sedona. Results vary, and we do not promise outcomes.

Takeaway: Expect one to two short sessions, gradual change, and a straight answer on fit.

Is Sofwave right for you?

Sofwave is a defined tool. It works at a shallow, controlled depth to prompt collagen renewal, and it is best for early to moderate laxity and fine lines. It is not a facelift and does not replace one.

The consultation is free and zero-pressure. Ready to see if Sofwave fits your goals? Book now
